Here's what a cigar is, in plain-speak:
"An excuse to sit down and talk with another guy for an hour. Think about it... when does this ever happen outside a cigar lounge? When guys are 'hunting together' they're sitting in a tree stand being quiet. When guys are 'watching a ballgame together' they're sitting in a living room or a sports bar staring slack-jawed at a television. When guys are 'shopping for antiques together' they're walking through a junky antique store making fun of all the ridiculous stuff inside and not really talking about the stuff of life.
The cigar lounge removes the awkward stiltedness of the Church Lobby ("How are YOU doing Bob?"), and it's not as formal and intimidating as a counselor's office, yet it still works as a place to talk."
The Christian Gentleman's Smoking Companion, by Ted Kluck & Zach Bartels
I didn't start smoking cigars regularly until 2013. I'm glad I won't have the regrets of J. Gresham Machen (see quote below). As I put together this website it became very apparent that much of what I do centers around relationships and reflection. Cigar smoking weaves itself into both of these quite well. whether in a more formal setting like the Corona Cigar Company - Downtown Orlando, Belicoso Cigars & Cafe' (on MIlls Ave), or relaxing in my spa at home, overlooking the lake. Conversations, reflection and even preparing for a Bible study, all seem to go a little deeper.
"I intend to smoke a good cigar to the glory of God before I go to bed tonight."
"After a dull sermon, a boring faculty meeting, a hard day, etc., one needs something to look forward to. In that way, smoking is like heaven. It, of course, isn't heaven, but it will do until then."
"The pipe gives the wise man time to think and the fool something to stick in his mouth."
"After some time he felt for his pipe. It was not broken, and that was something. Then he felt for his pouch, and there was some tobacco in it, and that was something more. Then he felt for matches and he could not find any at all, and that shattered his hopes completely."
"When I think what a wonderful aid cigar smoking is to friendship and Christian patience I have sometimes regretted that I never began to smoke."
"Eating and sleeping are the only activities that should be allowed to interrupt a man's enjoyment of his cigar."
"Cigars are a tremendous addition to the enjoyment of life."
